bobby melody let it be

A: Bobby Melody : Let it be

B: Mighty Two : version

Bobby Melody is something of a roots reggae hero. Though not as prolific as you might expect from a roots reggae hero, his tunes (almost) never failed to make an impression. Apart from releasing a few classics under his own name, he also voiced the classic Conquering Lion for Yabby You (as Ralph Brothers) and recorded with the Divine Brothers at the Black Ark. Their biggest hit, “Perception,”  credits Errol Thompson as engineer on the label.

Although the title might suggest otherwise, “Let it be” is obviously not a Beatles cover. Utilizing the riddim of the Melodians’ “You don’t need me” rocksteady hit (Treasure Isle) this Bobby Melody gem easily matches the standard set by his biggest hit to date: “Jah give I joy (in the morning)“. The dub showcases the phazer sound that was used very often by Errol Thompson at this time. There’s no date on my copy, but my guess is this was released in 1976.
