MR NIGEL – LEAVING THE BALL

A: Mr Nigel – Leaving the ball

B: Neville Hinds – Sweep the street

This 7 inch was given to me by a good friend on a good night. You know the kind: drinking some beers, having some dinner, a few laughs and, most of all, playing dozens of records. He knew I was into the Gibbs sound but still seemed a bit baffled when I instantly recognized the riddim when he played it. But how could I have not ? It was the same cut of the “Wear you to the ball” riddim that was also featured on “Joy Stick” which I must have heard at least a hundred times before finally unraveling its content. This nice, pink labeled Pressure Beat 7 inch made things a bit easier for me though, seeing that it was credited and all.

Neville Hinds, also known as Neville Irons, is a pianist and organist who can be heard on many a Treasure Isle, Lloyd Daley and early Joe Gibbs recording. The biggest hit credited to his name was “The Originator” (prod. by Lloyd Daley) but his biggest succes came when he shifted careers and turned producer/arranger for the Dynamic Studios. In this quality he recorded big artists like Barry Biggs, Eric Donaldson, Byron Lee and even Paul Simon.

The A side of this single is credited to Mr. Nigel, who heartily exclaims to wear you “from the ball”, rather than “to the ball.” Mr. Nigel is actually Nicky Thomas, who recorded quite a few sides for Joe Gibbs in those days. The single is not crediting a writer or composer, so maybe that is the reason why Nicky Thomas’ name was replaced by a reference to his first hit: “Run, Nigel, Run” (prod. by Derrick Harriot.) ‘Leaving the Ball’ is certainly not the best version of the Paragons’ classic “Wear you to te ball” out there – nor is it Nicky Thomas’ finest hour –  but its’ a decent offering none the less.

indeed! I have got it, but haven’t had time to post it on the blog yet. It is a different single though. Lizzy is the dj version to the version featured here.

    Thanks for the input!
